Harold W. Fehderau was born 6 February 1932 in Kitchener, Ontario, and attended the Kitchener Mennonite Brethren Church. After completing high school, Fehderau enrolled at Waterloo College (a part of the University of Western Ontario), from which he graduated in 1954. He went on to complete an M.A. in German Language and Literature from the University of Colorado in 1956. During this time Fehderau also taught Modern Languages at Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas.
